International Curriculum
International Curriculum
At Shaftesbury Park Primary School, we use an International Curriculum for teaching subjects like science, history, geography, music, art, technology, and PE. This curriculum is designed to be creative and engaging, while also promoting a global perspective and meeting the requirements of the English National Curriculum.
What is the International Curriculum?
The International Curriculum connects different subjects through thematic topics, making learning not only interesting but also relevant to the world around us. This approach helps children:
- Gain Essential Knowledge and Skills: Covers a broad range of subjects, ensuring that children learn the important knowledge and skills they need.
- Stay Engaged and Motivated: By making learning exciting and relevant, it keeps children committed to their education, both now and in the future.
- Develop as Global Citizens: Encourages children to appreciate their own culture while respecting the cultures and nationalities of others, helping them grow into thoughtful, responsible citizens.
How International Curriculum is Structured
The International Curriculum is divided into three phases, each covering two years. During each phase, students explore a variety of themed units chosen by the school to ensure that all subjects are thoroughly covered. Each unit:
- Focuses on One Main Subject: While all subjects are included, one is emphasized more than the others to deepen understanding.
- Begins with an Exciting ‘Entry Point’: This activity is designed to capture students' interest and imagination at the start of each unit.
- Ends with a Fun ‘Exit Point’: After exploring the topic, students participate in a culminating activity that ties together everything they’ve learned.
Benefits of the International Curriculum for Children:
- Engaging Learning Experience: Thematic topics make learning fun and relevant, keeping children interested and motivated.
- Comprehensive Skill Development: The curriculum covers a wide range of subjects, ensuring children build a strong foundation of knowledge and skills.
- Global Awareness: The curriculum helps children develop respect for different cultures and nationalities, fostering a sense of international-mindedness.
Shaftesbury Park provides a well-rounded, engaging education that prepares children for the future, both academically and as global citizens.
