LIteracy Curriculum

Literacy

At Shaftesbury Park Primary School, we use a variety of teaching methods in our literacy lessons to engage students and help them succeed. Our approach is a focus on making lessons relevant and meaningful for each child whilst set in a global context. This ensures that their writing has purpose and context.

What We Believe

We believe that studying English helps children develop essential skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These skills are important for a wide range of purposes, such as expressing ideas, sharing views, and communicating feelings. Our aim is to nurture creativity and imagination while helping students become thoughtful and critical readers of various texts, including stories, poetry, drama, non-fiction, and media.

Through exploring language—its patterns, structures, and origins—children gain a deeper understanding of how language works. We encourage them to apply their knowledge and skills in different speaking and writing situations. Additionally, we focus on developing strong spelling strategies, with regular practice and weekly spelling tests for children from Year 1 to Year 6.

Phonics and Reading

We support early reading and phonics development using the "Little Wandle" phonics scheme. This interactive program introduces letters and sounds in an engaging way, helping children enjoy learning to read. They apply their phonics knowledge with matched reading books that reinforce what they've learned.

Benefits of Our Literacy Approach for Pupils:

  • Purposeful Learning: Lessons are designed to be relevant to each child's experiences, making learning more engaging and meaningful.
  • Comprehensive Skill Development: Children build strong listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills that are essential for their academic and personal growth.
  • Supportive Phonics Learning: Our phonics program helps children develop early reading skills in a fun and interactive way, setting them up for success in literacy.

Our goal at Shaftesbury Park is to help every child become a confident and capable communicator, equipped with the literacy skills they need for the future.
