Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium is funding that schools receive in addition to their main budget ‘to provide additional support and resources to narrow the attainment gap of disadvantaged pupils’ (DfE, 2012) and to ensure that those pupils benefit from the same opportunities as students from less deprived families.

Pupil premium funding is allocated to:

• students who are currently eligible for Free School Meals or who have been eligible at any point in the past 6 years
• students who have been continuously looked after for the past six months or who have been either adopted from care (under the Adoption and Children Act 2002) or who have left care under a Special Guardianship/Residence Order
• students whose parent/parents are currently serving in the armed forces or are in receipt of a pension from the Ministry of Defence

Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit, however the impact of Pupil Premium spending is closely monitored to ensure effectiveness, with all schools required to produce and publish reports on what the money has been used for and the impact this has had.
