Pupil Wellbeing

At Shaftesbury Park Primary School, we recognize the crucial role that positive mental wellbeing plays in helping children thrive now and continue to do so throughout their lives. We are committed to creating an environment where children feel supported, understood, and valued.

Talking and listening are key elements in promoting mental wellbeing. They help children make sense of their feelings and manage difficult experiences, which is why these practices are deeply embedded in the daily life of Shaftesbury Park.

As a Rights Respecting school, we emphasize the importance of every child's right to be heard, in line with Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Our staff are always open to discussions with pupils on matters that are important to them, and we also encourage children to express themselves through writing.

To further support positive mental wellbeing, we offer the following programs:

Circle Time

Every week, all children participate in Circle Time sessions where they share their thoughts and discuss topics such as friendship and conflict resolution. This helps build a sense of community and provides a safe space for children to express their feelings.

Mindfulness Sessions

Mindfulness is an essential tool for improving concentration, regulating emotions, and reducing stress and anxiety. Each school day begins with a mindfulness session, helping children to start their day with focus and calm.

Talk Time

Pupils from Years 1 to 6 can sign up for Talk Time, where they can discuss any concerns with a trained member of the Unlocking Potential team. This initiative ensures that children have a trusted adult to turn to, and any issues can be addressed promptly with the involvement of school staff when necessary.

Friendship Buddies

Friendship Buddies are selected by their classmates every half term for their listening skills and empathy. These buddies are available during playtimes and lunchtimes to help children who may have a problem they can't solve on their own. They can be easily identified by their special hat or sash.

Peer Mentors

Peer Mentors offer individual support to fellow pupils, helping them with both their learning and any personal challenges. They play a key role in welcoming new students and ensuring they feel included. Our Peer Mentors receive regular training and are supervised by our Learning Mentor, Mrs. Di Doi.

Worry Boxes

For children who may find it difficult to voice their concerns, each classroom has a Worry Box where they can leave a note. A staff member will follow up on these notes the same day, ensuring that every child's worries are addressed.

Children’s Mental Health Week

We celebrate Children’s Mental Health Week annually, offering special assemblies, activities, and workshops centered around the theme of the year. This event reinforces our ongoing commitment to promoting mental wellbeing.

Benefits for Pupils:

  • Emotional Resilience: Our wellbeing initiatives help children build emotional resilience, giving them tools to manage stress, anxiety, and other challenges.
  • Enhanced Communication Skills: Through activities like Circle Time and Talk Time, pupils develop strong communication skills, learning to express their thoughts and listen to others.
  • Supportive Community: Programs like Friendship Buddies and Peer Mentors foster a supportive and inclusive school community, ensuring that every child feels valued and connected.

At Shaftesbury Park, we are dedicated to nurturing our pupils' mental and emotional wellbeing, helping them to grow into confident, resilient individuals.
